This is a pretty generalised post, and more for those with sh*t on their plate at the less extreme end of the spectrum, but tips on how to let sh*t go none the less. If you need to finally let go of something you have been holding onto far too long and want to go into the new year a new you then try and follow some or all of these steps, they might just do the trick!
WRITE IT DOWN
If the negativity is because of another person, write a letter to them. Make it an unapologetic one, with everything that you need to get off your chest, but don’t send it! Go back to it a few days later and see if you still feel the same. If not, bin it. If you do, then re-work the letter so that it is civil enough to send. If the thing bringing you down is yourself, write a letter to yourself noting what it is that’s disappointed you. If letter writing doesn’t do it for you, or your issue is because of something non-human then create a simple mind map including the things that are bringing you down, the way they are making you feel, and the steps you are going to take to fix them.
Decide if the issue is worth it and either move on or let go of it. Don’t stay in the middle, it’s messy, holding onto things only makes it worse. You need to know where you stand. If your issue is human-related find it in your heart to forgive and forget, especially if it is something trivial. Sometimes you have to be the person that reaches out an olive branch. If not for them, your own sanity. It’s always better to build bridges than burn them. If the issue is a lot worse then you need to decide to stop making time for them and make more time for people that are better for your life. For issues that are less tangible, realise that the end of something can be a chance for the start of something new. Think about the bigger picture and be rational about it. Not everything is about you, whatever has happened, is likely to have affected others too.
FOCUS ON TREATING YOURSELF RIGHT
Stop focusing on the issue. Practice yoga or meditation, make sure you are eating right, go shopping, dance, just do what makes you feel good on the inside! (See my post on 4 simple steps to calm). There is more to life and to be honest, to who you are. Make yourself feel better and with that good vibes will come.
BE THANKFUL FOR THE POSITIVES
Focus on them every single day. There shouldn’t be anything in your life that consumes everything that you are, and whatever it is that you are holding on to shouldn’t be either. There is so much more to life, and the sooner you realise that the better. Don’t lose sight of what really matters, and soon, setting your sights on the positives will start to outweigh the negatives.
“There shouldn’t be anything in your life that consumes everything that you are, and whatever it is that you are holding on to shouldn’t be either”.
LAUGH WHEN YOU CAN
If you start focusing on the good things, you are likely to loosen up and in turn, find more things to laugh at. This is something that helps me to really let my hair down and let go of sh*t. I feel happier within myself when I give in to my stupid sense of humour and just learn not to take life too seriously.
SAY YOUR FINAL PIECE
Whether you have chosen to say it in an argument; calmly afterwards; written a letter; sent a text; made a call; had a word with yourself; whatever! just make it your final word on the matter, and to quote Elsa “Let it Go”. This goes for other issues as well, say your last words about it and replace it with another more positive thought! Give it a go.
LOOK TO THE FUTURE
You have your entire future to look forward to, so whatever it is that you are holding onto right now is just a small chapter of your life. Excite yourself with what’s to come, whether it’s a week from now, a month from now or 6 months from now. And if you don’t have anything to look forward to? Put plans in place so that you do.
Stop overthinking it. Sometimes, all you need is a good nights sleep. When you have done your own head in all day, overanalysing situations that you can’t change, it’s time to focus on things you can change. So go to bed, and wake up tomorrow with a new perspective.
I really hope this helped some of you. If it did please let me know how and if any of my tips were more helpful than others!
Happy New Year and a Happy New You!
